At Baselworld 2017, the world’s largest annual watch fair, it soon became obvious that Tudor and Breitling had entered into a partnership with each other as each brand offered new watches using movement technology from the other (see the full story on which watches plus original photography at Tudor And Breitling: Two Sports Watch Manufacturers Unexpectedly – But Not For The First Time – Sharing Movements in 2017). Now it appears the pair has also decided to exchange a prominent ambassador . . .
In 2012 Breitling announced David Beckham, one of the world’s most noticeable professional soccer players and recognized fashion icon, as its face for the Transocean Chronograph Unitimer world time watch. As the Swiss watch brand hadn’t produced any new campaigns featuring Victoria Beckham’s attractive husband – perhaps due to its impending sale (see Swiss Watchmaker Breitling Sold To CVC Capital Partners)? – one may have assumed that the partnership was over. But perhaps the contract was just transferred to its new comrade in arms (uh, wrists)? Speculation, naturally.
Tudor launches its partnership with the star by making Beckham the face of the brand’s new “Born to Dare” campaign, a tagline created to reflect on both its brand history and its possible future by alluding to the pioneers that have worn both Tudor and its parent company Rolex as well as the founder of both brands, Hans Wilsdorf, a German watchmaker who founded the Swiss watch brands in 1905 after moving to London. His idea was to provide quality timepieces at economical prices.
Tudor continues to live this ideal today with an incredibly good pricing structure and attractively designed, vintage-style tool watches. Recent breakout pieces have included the Heritage Black Bay Bronze ($3,679) and the Heritage Black Bay Chronograph powered by the aforementioned Breitling movement (4,800 Swiss francs on a steel bracelet).
According to Tudor, Beckham is enamored of wristwatches and already privately owns several Rolexes. “I was attracted to Tudor by the attention to detail I could see in their watches,” the new ambassador said in a statement. “I then learned about the history of the brand: one of adventure, pioneer diving and daring expeditions. I was instantly hooked.” Beckham will wear both the aforementioned Black Bay Chronograph and the new Black Bay S&G, an insanely good-looking two-tone stainless steel and gold diver’s watch whose design was inspired by the brand’s past. Away from the spotlight, Beckham has been a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador dedicated to helping the health and education of children in Africa for more than a decade.
